Economic cycle clock: which phase are we in?

Economic cycle clock

🩸 Money is Blood — Assets are Organs

The global financial system is a living body: money (liquidity) is the Blood, and assets are the Organs. Blood never stands still — depending on the economy's "weather" (the cycle), the body pumps blood toward one organ or pulls it from another to survive and grow.

BONDS & CASH — Heart & Lungs: in crisis (Recession), blood retreats from the limbs to the core. They won't make you grow, but they keep you alive.
STOCKS & CRYPTO — Brain & Nervous System: when healthy (Expansion), abundant warm blood drives the brain at full power — euphoria, asset leaps.
REAL ESTATE — Skeleton & Joints: the structure and long-term durability of your financial body.
OIL & COMMODITIES — Metabolism: when overworked (Overheating), the production machine devours raw energy to keep running hot.
GOLD — Immune System: when the blood is poisoned (runaway inflation), every organ stalls — only the Gold "antibodies" wake up to protect the body.
The winner is whoever moves their "Blood" into the right "Organ" for each phase of the economic cycle.

What is the economic cycle?

The clock turns the state of 6 groups of macro indicators into a score on a 60-point scale, then places that score in one of four phases. The composite score mainly describes the US economy; the regional needles are a separate view from leading indicators or proxy data, not money currently flowing.

Most series have a FRED code you can look up; ISM PMI comes from ForexFactory when data is available. The regional needles use OECD CLI via FRED, Eurostat ESI or US–Vietnam trade data. The Global needle averages the regions with a 100-based index, excluding Vietnam.

// HOW_TO_USE

How to use the clock when researching trades

The clock does not pick trades. It picks the risk level — and whether to run at all.

Decide the risk level, not the trade

The clock does not say which pair to buy or sell. It answers a different question: what percentage of capital to put at risk right now. The Peak and Recession phases are both times to reduce, though for opposite reasons.

Decide whether to run at all

There are phases when the best move is to stay out. A trend-following system running through a market that keeps changing direction will lose steadily — and that is not the system's fault.

Read it alongside the EA Trading Bot's trading hours

DinexSpace's 9 EAs publish their trading hours on each EA's page. Compare the major data release calendar with those hours to decide whether to switch the EA off around news.

Review afterwards, do not predict in advance

The clock's greatest value comes when you look back: the EA Trading Bot lost last month — which phase was the market in? Without context, every losing streak looks the same.

DinexSpace's 9 EAs publish their trading hours on each EA's page — see each EA's trading hours, then compare them with the red-news calendar to see which window major data releases fall into.

// BOUNDARIES

What this page does and does not do

Said up front so nobody reads a table of indicators as advice.

Yes: data series you can check

Most of the composite indicators have a FRED code; ISM PMI can come from ForexFactory. The regional needles use OECD CLI, Eurostat ESI or a US–Vietnam trade indicator.

Yes: public scoring rules

The green/yellow/red/white status is converted into points, each group is normalized to 10, and the six groups are added up. Each indicator's thresholds are shown for comparison.

No: market forecasts

The clock describes the cycle currently under way based on published data. It does not say what prices will do next month.

No: signals for EAs

DinexSpace's EAs do NOT read this macro data. They run on their own trading hours and rules. The clock is a tool for the operator.

// FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the economic cycle clock?

The system splits 34 macro indicators into six groups. Each group is normalized to a maximum of 10 points; the maximum total is 60. A total of 0–20 is Recession, 21–30 is Recovery, 31–45 is Expansion and above 45 is Peak.

How is each group's score calculated?

Each indicator in green status gets 1 point, yellow or white gets 0.5 points, red gets 0 points. The total is divided by the number of indicators in the group, multiplied by 10 and rounded; the six group scores are added into the composite score.

How do the data sources of the composite needle and the regional needles differ?

The composite needle mainly uses US macro series via FRED; ISM PMI can come from ForexFactory. The regional needles use OECD CLI via FRED for many regions, Eurostat ESI for Europe, and US import growth from Vietnam as a proxy indicator for Vietnam. The Global needle is the average of the current and previous levels of at least 3 regions with a 100-based index, excluding Vietnam because the Vietnam indicator is %YoY. Regions with missing data are not shown.

How is each region's phase determined?

The system compares the current indicator level with the previous period to see whether it is rising or falling, then compares it with a benchmark: 100 for index-type indicators, 0 for Vietnam's year-on-year trade growth. At or above the benchmark and rising is Expansion; at or above and falling is Peak; below and rising is Recovery; below and falling is Recession.

Do DinexSpace's EAs read the clock to enter trades?

No. The clock is a research tool for operators to compare the macro context with their trading system. It does not create entry signals or promise any EA Trading Bot performance.

What do the update time and the LIVE label mean?

The backend caches the cycle result for at most one hour. The LIVE label appears if at least one composite indicator was refreshed from an online source; the other indicators may still be snapshots. The page build time is when the HTML was generated; the data date, when available, is the latest FRED observation date. Sources whose date cannot be determined show no data date.

You know the context; you still need a set of rules

The clock tells you whether to be cautious or aggressive. But when to enter and where to stop out still need a system. See the EA Trading Bots for rent, or the indicator library to build your own.
